Population Dynamics of the Black Tinder Fungus Beetle Bolitophagus reticulatus
نویسنده
چکیده
The aim of the study was to describe seasonal changes in numbers and settlement of basidiocarps of tinder fungus [Fomes fomentarius (L. ex Fr.) Kick] by the coleopteran Bolitophagus reticulatus L. in relation to the weight and the stage of decomposition of a basidiocarp in different types of forest habitats. Tinder fungi, which contained the coleopterans, were collected from four sample plots located in the Tuchola Forest and the Myœlêcinek area located within the administrative borders of the town of Bydgoszcz. Out of 763 collected tinder fungus basidiocarps, the coleopteran B. reticulatus inhabited 322, from which 2643 imagines and 685 larvae were obtained. In each of the studied habitats noticeable concentrations of coleopterans in dead basidiocarps of tinder fungus were observed. Differences in settlement of living and dead fruiting bodies proved statistically significant. Irrespective of the sample plot where the fungi were collected, the number and settlement of tinder fungus basidiocarps by B. reticulatus changed within a year, reaching highest values in winter. The influence of the season on values describing settlement of basidiocarps by B. reticulatus was confirmed statistically. No statistically significant influence of the forest habitat type and the weight of basidiocarps on settlement of tinder fungus by B. reticulatus were revealed.

POPULATION ECOLOGY Seasonal Dynamics of Mites and Fungi and Their Interaction with Southern Pine Beetle
We evaluated whether Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann populations were inßuenced by nontrophic interactions involving commensal mites, their mutualistic bluestain fungus Ophiostoma minus (Hedgc.) H. and P. Sydow, and beetle-mutualistic mycangial fungi. We tested for effects of delayed, nonlinear, or positive feedback fromO. minus and mites onD. frontalis population growth. We predicted that (1...

Population studies of grass grub and black beetle have revealed simple patterns of population determination. Populations fluctuate in response to variations in soil moisture and temperature. The upper limit to population growth is set by density dependent factors (larval mortality of grass grub and variation in natality of black beetle). Parasites and predators appear to be generally unimportan...

Feedback from community interactions involving mutualisms are a rarely explored mechanism for generating complex population dynamics. We examined the effects of two linked mutualisms on the population dynamics of a beetle that exhibits outbreak dynamics. One mutualism involves an obligate association between the bark beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis and two mycangial fungi. The second mutualism i...

Two new species of Ancyronyx Erichson, 1847 (Coleoptera: Elmidae) are described from Borneo: A. pulcherrimus (Brunei) and A. reticulatus (Sabah). Habitus views, illustrations of important characters as well as plastron structures of Ancyronyx reticulatus are presented and discussed.
